India's Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are the country's most prestigious and top engineering institutions. In 1951, Kharagpur became the first IIT, followed by IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Delhi. There are 23 IITs in India that offer 11279 seats for UG programmes. The most popular courses, such as BTech and M.Tech, have 9,611 and 2,534 seats available, respectively in all IITs. The IIT Council, which controls the general administration, links all of India's IITs together. The Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) publishes the IIT rankings every year via the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

Admission Criteria for All IITs in India

Candidates must pass their 10+2 class examination with mathematics, chemistry, and physics in order to get admission and a seat in any of the above-mentioned IITs in India. Candidates for IIT's undergraduate programmes had to take an admission exam and get a good score. This entrance exam is held all throughout the country.

The IIT-JEE (MAINS & ADVANCED) Joint Entrance Exam, is an entrance exam that assesses a candidate's understanding in mathematics, physics, and chemistry to get entry into all Indian IITs. The entrance tests for IIT's postgraduate programmes are different. Exams like GATE, CEED, JAM, and JMAT fall within this category.

A student is eligible for admissions at IIT institutions in India for B.Tech and Dual degree programs at IITs, when he secured a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination with subjects mentioned above. 

Applicants follow below mentioned steps for getting entry into UG programs at All IITs in India:

  • Step 1 - JEE Main: The Joint Entrance Examination is a national level entrance examination conducted by the NTA for admission into Engineering (B.E./B.Tech) and Architecture (B.Arch./B.Plan.) courses in India. The exam is conducted to for admission in the top IIITs, NITs, and SFIs, State Engineering Colleges of the participating states and other prestigious participating institutions.
  • Step 2 - JEE Advanced. The candidates who have cleared and completed the JEE Mains exam, are eligible to sit for the JEE Advanced entrance exam. This is one of the toughest exam to crack in India.
  • Step 3 - Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA Counselling): After appearing for JEE Advanced and completing it, the next step is to appear for the JoSAA counseling process. During JoSAA counseling, all the IIT in India releases round-wise as well as category-wise cut-offs for taking admissions in B.Tech and Dual Degree programs.
